We are celebrating an important milestone. José Camacho Perez has been a diligent student of Taller Guaguarey. He is autistic. As a result of his discipline, intelligence and commitment, he was successfully certified as a Puerto Rican artisan. Recently, he and his mother visited the office of the Puerto Rico Vocational Rehabilitation Administration. This agency offers comprehensive services to people with autism. After a review of José’s artisan credentials, they were orientated about the personalized services of the agency such as job training, providing tools and equipment, assistance in setting up a pottery studio, and counseling.

On the last day of the semester, José’s mother shared this life changing news. She expressed gratitude and acknowledged Taller Guaguarey’s essential role in helping him develop the necessary social and technical skills and acquire his license as a Puerto Rican artisan. Her words brought tears to the teacher and students. She expressed profound appreciation because the classes provided José with the opportunity to find support and a means to become financially independent and self-sufficient. The mother told us that now she can rest assured that when she is no longer with him, he can care for himself.

We are so proud of Jose!

In the children’s pottery class, we focused on our cherished cultural tradition of the Three Kings. After we explained their meaning and history, the students practiced and created small sculptures of the Three Kings. Enclosed are photos of their hard work.
